With a laid-back vibe to compliment the personalities of Cinema Roll Podcast co-hosts Anthony and Ryan, their podcast brand design is anything but boring. I had a lot of fun collaborating with them to create their new look!
Ryan and I became good friends back when we were in college together at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene. After graduating, we both worked together on the same corporate marketing team in DFW. When he first began talking to me about a new podcast brand design, I knew he would let me take the reigns on creativity! Both Anthony and Ryan specified they wanted sketches of themselves in the logo and left the rest pretty open ended.
The Cinema Roll Podcast embodies a feel-good show you can tune into for updates on the latest TV and box office releases. I wanted to really capture a cinematic feel and portray the sketches of their face in a fun, illustrative style. First, I started out by sketching their faces with a pencil. I traced over the images with a micron pen, and once I was happy with the results I went ahead and vectorized the illustrations.
Next, I added a relaxed script font that matched the vibe of the sketches. The neutral color palette of bold blacks, whites, grays, and tans had essentially already been established by the co-hosts. To add more contrast and give more versatility, I suggested adding navy. The color scheme really added to the film feel of the brand.
Moving further into the project, I focused on submarks. I wanted to play around more with illustration and decided to add an old school microphone. Because of the detail of their logo, I also wanted to be sure to include an icon that could be scaled down without losing legibility. For this, I used a triangular shape as the basis to resemble a “play” button. Ultimately I ended up including it in the primary logo as well!
I loved getting to create such a unique brand design for the Cinema Roll Podcast. If you haven’t listened to one of their shows, be sure to follow them on any major podcast platform!
